The large kitchen / family room / eating area seats 6 easily and has a large TV, dvd and vcr (with a movie library). The kitchen is fully equipped with stove top on the island, oven, large microwave, heating drawer and all minor appliances (toaster oven, blender, coffee maker... And every utensil and all dishes / glasses / wine glasses anyone would need. The livingroom shares a wood (and gas) fireplace with the family room and is a peaceful room full of new, comfortable leather couches and (4) recliners. The elk antler and glass coffee table, the bronze wildlife lamps and art everywhere makes this a fun and comfortable home to enjoy whether one is staying home to find peace & write, or launching off into the world of athletic and aesthetic delights just beyond the door.

Though this four bedroom could house up to 10 people, we would prefer smaller groups of 2 - 5 people please.

Elk Harbor is nestled high in the hills overlooking Carbondale, with a full-on view from the many windows of the magnificent Mount Sopris and central to every possible activity you could want. The city of Glenwood Springs with itsfamous hot springs pool, vapor caves, tram ride and fun shopping is 20 mins one way while the charming Basalt and Aspen are 20 mins and 45 mins the other. We are only 1.5 miles off the 4-lane road leading to Snowmass and Aspen (rated by many as the top ski areas in the world) and yet from the house you hear nothing because we have a valley horse pasture and BLM land (undevelopable govt.-owned forest) and more hills separating us from the rest of the world. A wonderful grocery store, top restaurants and art galleries that would remind old-timers of the original Aspen are a few minutes away in Carbondale center.

Our caretaker/tenant is a virtual concierge who also rents out the use of his raft and river-running (rafting and fishing) skills in the summertime.  This is not a guaranteed service, but one which could be arranged when the guests come.

We fly into Denver's International Airport because we love the three-hour drive through the Rockies to reach our home. Those for whom the mountain highway is not their idea of fun can fly from Denver to Aspen and rent a car there (about 30 mins. from our home).

Car necessary: yes; Car useful: yes.

Activities notes : It is impossible to do justice to the activities available. In the wintertime, of course skiing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating and shopping come to mind. But summer through mid-October is my favorite time. There are multiple options for every sport -- hiking trails that will challenge the experienced and others to seduce the beginner. Water rafting for the faint of heart and further upstream are rapids to excite the near-jaded. Bike paths connect all the towns and one favorite of mine is the 18 mile (slightly downhill) route from Aspen to Basalt and then to have a meal along the river at the downtown Basalt restaurant. But bike rentals can be found 4 mins away in Carbondale and a ride along the river toward Snowmass or marble is quite wonderful as well. The half hour drive to Bahr Ranch offers glorious ATV rides on a 1000 acre ranch high up in the mountains. And if you prefer to see the scenery on horseback, the Bahr family offers that as well. Great fishing (I'm told) can be found in Roaring Fork River (a mile and a half from our home) or the Colorado. Our caretaker would be the expert adviser re: where to catch the best fish. Photographers find endless opportunities to take prize-winning photos year-round. Given that Aspen and the surrounds have attracted not just millionaires but billionaires from all over the world, the secondhand stores are inimitable in the area. Extravagant and often international cast-offs one wouldn't see elsewhere can be had for great bargains. The art galleries and jewelers in Aspen could rank with the best anywhere. As could the broad array of restaurants throughout the valley named after the river that runs through it -- the Roaring Fork. For those who don't ski, there are opportunities for tubing locally and for horse-drawn sleigh rides and snowmobiling adventures.
