Catalina is easily reached by highspeed ferry from San Pedro or Long Beach, both locations in south west Los Angeles. The ferry docks in Avalon, the only city on Catalina. A short taxi ride gets you to Hamilton Cove, located on the ocean 1 1/2 mile from the city center. Avalon has fantastic restaurants, shopping, scuba and snorkling trips, charter fishing boats, boat rentals, golf, horseback riding, para-sailing, ocean kayaking, cultural attractions and the world famous Casino. 95% of Catalina is a nature preserve. Transportation and tours into the rugged interior originate from Avalon. Catalina is unspoiled...experience what Southern California was like a hundred years ago. Spend a day exploring the secluded windward beaches You probably will have one all to yourself! Mountain biking and hiking are very popular (watch out for the wild buffalo that roam the island freely). Numerous isolated campsites are available throughout the island, accessible by kayak or hike.
Fly into LosAngeles International Airport (LAX) or Long Beach Airport. Take a taxi or shuttle service to Catalina Express ferry terminals in either San Pedro or Long Beach. (approximately 45 minutes from LAX and 10 minutes from Long Beach Airport). Take ferry to Avalon, Catalina Island (one hour). From pier in Avalon take taxi to Hamilton Cove (15 minutes).
